Biographical Information

Jeremiah Brumbaugh Tawzer was born in Menallen Township, Adams Co. PA in 1825.  He was the son of John Matlier Tawzer, and Mary Magdalina Brumbaugh. He lived close to the Pine Grove Furnace Iron Works, and successfully courted the daughter of the manager of the foundry, Barbara Thomas. They formed a life partnership that was marked by creativity, intelligence and mystery.

Jeremiah was a song writer, and while in Adams Co., befriended Moses Meals and William Roff, who also wrote songs. They collaborated on several in this collection. JBT also provided many fraktur art illustrations for his book that decorate the fascinating well-filled spaces.

In 1856, they came by covered wagon to Woodford Co. IL., bringing with them many important artifacts of their lives in Pennsylvania.  Not the least of these were the healing practices that had been passed down in the families going back to Switzerland/Germany in the Middle Ages.

They became well-known for their healing powers in the Central Illinois area, actually rivaling the early area physicians with their blend of devout Christian beliefs and Powwow recipes for holistic medical cures. We explore that and other aspects of their endeavors in this website.
