Jacob had a musical voice, moderate and winning. He was sympathetic, could be moved to tears, yet a man with rare poise and dignity. He pitied the slaves and sometimes purchased their liberty. He opened his meat house to the poor and needy. His poetic temperment manifested itself in his preaching, and he amazed people with the depth of his reasoning ability. |
