John Price

John Price, emigrated to America in 1719 to enjoy a larger liberty of conscience. He settled at Germantown, PA. He had only one son, John II, who had an ailment of the lungs and was in poor health. Being anxious that our Price line not vanish from the earth, Johannes picked a strong and vigourous Huron Indian girl as a wife for his son, since they were known as runners with

Daniel (our ancestor) m. Barbara Elizabeth Weicker b. 10/14/1726. She was an Irish Lutheran girl, and for this he was excommunicated from the Brethren Church. Alexander Mack himself wrote that the church erred in dealing so harshly with him. There is a  copy of this letter in the Price history.

very strong lungs. And their marriage was arranged. To this union, two sons were born, John III and Daniel, (our ancestor). John II died before the second son was born, and John I raised the family.

The incident of this marriage caused the family records to be hidden by later generations, (see below) so there is a period between the son Daniel and a later Daniel that was the father of George Labbler Price that is just not well known.

 Notes on the Price Family

The first Price in England is noted as being knighted as royalty in the reign of William the Conqueror abt. 1077.

The Price Family has been prominent in the British Empire and in the United States, its members having played important roles in war and in peace. The Ancient cognomen of the Price family was styled "Ap Rhys".  This "Ap", the Welsh equivalent of our english, "son", when it has come before a name beginning with a vowel or a liquid sound, has in many instances become incorporated with it.  Thus Ap Rhys, in course of time changed to Ap Ryce, Apryce, Pryce, and anglosized into Price.  Various forms of spelling include; Reece, Preece, and Prise and Priesz.  (taken from a work on the Price Family by J.M.Seaver, published by The American Historical-Geneaological Society, Philadelphia, PA.)

The First Price Immigrants

According to tradition there were 3 Price brothers who came to America from Wales with William Penn. These brothers were said to have been on the second trip of William Penn on a ship called the "Seven Sisters".

John Price b. in County Grecknock Wales in 1584, came from England on the "Starr" in 1620.   Phillip Price came to America with the first Welsh Settlers in 1690, and married Margaret Morgan. He died in 1720. William Price from England came to America, settled in Mass. and died about 1780.

 Paradox of Samuel Price

You will note that there is another lineage beside John Price on the front page. This is because of a conflict in information. I have presented both because there is evidence to support both conclusions. However, this version my grandmother took from notes in family bibles and in family writings and documents, so it is the version to which I subscribe. The mixup is easily understood because of the following events.  Ephraim Price's son John married a girl who had many family members killed by Indians. When the Price historian, Wanger, was assembling the family history, John's wife would not let John release the family history because she did not wish it to be known that our family had Indian blood. It has been said that she destroyed the record, but that is not true, since it exists in a Price Family Bible in the possession of my aunt. It did give rise to some errors in the family history however, and it is still being sorted out, but this account is the one that I accept until its proven wrong. You can click on the link to Samuel Price to see the other side of the argueing history however.
