Susanna Shaffer

Susanna's life was not the happiest ever. George left this life at 52 years, leaving her with 9 children, which could have been a comfort to her, but she was deprived of that as well. There are two hills at the Blackrock Forest in Blackrock PA. This is the home of Joseph Price, her son. One hill is called Blackrock Hill, and the other is called Mt. Misery. I can't help think that believe that hill was named in memory of his mother's life story.

George was bitten by a black widow spider while digging a drainage ditch and died a few hours later. Susanna remarried, but to a very cruel man named Cromer, who forced her to farm out her children to other homes, unless she paid him board and keep for them. The youngest, George and Edith went to live with Elizabeth, their eldest sister. Susanna saw very little of her children. Her tombstone reads, Susanna Price, wife of George Price.

George and Susana's son Gideon was a victim of the civil war, although he was a pacifist, he was drafted into the war, against his conscience. He deserted and near the close of the war was captured and imprisoned at Andersonville. His brothers and friends visited him to bring him food, but he was not allowed to receive it. In desperation, he ate his own flesh and later died of wounds and starvation. (See George Labler Price for detailed account)
