A number of old Brethren hymnals exist in the family heirlooms, bound in leather and printed in German and German/English. In Theodore's day, not many families could afford the expense of a hymnal, so the hymns were often sang as "lined hymns", meaning the leader, an elder or the minister would say two lines of the hymn and the congregation would sing.
