The Fraktur Art of JBT

One of the most stunning of JBT's artworks is used as a background for the website. It is labeled "Capitel" and is undoubtedly Philadelphia. The tall building appears to be Independence Hall. The figure to the right seems to be King George, however, this is only a guess. There's a magical quality about this drawing, that much is certain.

The work includes scenes of everyday life, animals, birds and dwellings.  Snake designs, bird images, and the images of the tools of daily life are particularly interesting. The depiction of an unidentified animal tending to and nursing its young, is remarkable.

The architectural drawings set a stage for the text in the book, showing a real interest on the part of JBT, for the way things were constructed. Attention to detail is evident, as each window is marked out, giving a sense of the size and scope of the buildings.

The home button on all the pages is a detail from book, originally depicting a man herding a pig with a stick. Enjoy!
