Johannes son,Johnannes II married the neighbor girl, Elizabeth Meily after spending 8 years helping his father clear the land, from virgin soil. They most likely lived with his parents until 1756 when he moved his to a 153 acre tract next to that of his father-in-law. Here he built a log cabin and proceeded to clear his land. He was fixing the bars on his gate, when he was attacked by a band of indians leaving his mutilated corpse. The Hebron Moravian Registry gives this account, "On May 16,1757, John Spitler II was jumped on by murderous indians and killed not far from his house on the Swatara. He was 38 years old and one year ago in April had just moved to Swatara. His mangled corpse was brought here the 17th of May accompanied by a large crowd. He was buried in the graveyard here. Elizabeth seeing the event take place, gathered up her 4 children and ran through the field to her fathers taking refuge in the blockhouse fort there, built in case of indian attack. From the distance, she could see the smoke raise as their cabin was put to the torch. His tombstone in the Moravian cemetary (#28) reads " JOHANNES SPITTLER, geb. d. 24 Sept.1718, Epmordt Von den Wilder d. 16, May 1757, Alt. 27 Jahr 9 mo. 3 ta. |
