Johannes Spitler II
B.Sept.24,1718 D. May 16, 1757
All of Johannes and Catharina's children were born in Switzerland. The youngest child, Hans was four years old when they made the voyage, and died as they made shore. Our ancestor, Johannes II was 18 when he became a citizen of America. The Spitlers settled in what is now upper Lebanon Co., then Lancaster, between Lickdale and Fredericksburg, just Northeast of presentday Harrisburg. |
m. Elizabeth Meily, in a Moravian Ceremony, all the early Spitlers were Moravian and were buried in the Hebron God's Acre cemetary of that group. All Moravian cemetarys are called God's Acre. Children: Anna Catherina b.1745, Johannes III b.1749, Catharine b.1752, Jacob b.1756.

Johannes father had built his home on Swatara Creek, named for the Swatara Indians. Johannes II married the daughter of their neighbor, Jacob Meily. His sister married Jacob Hantschi. Both Johannes and his brother-in-law were killed by the Swatara Indians. (SeeBelow) |

Jacob Hantschi, (a relative) met his untimely death when with Franz Albert and two youths, Frederick Weiser and John George Meiss were plowing a field on the Fischer farm at the "Hohl" (pass) in Monroe Valley, Bethel twp. on the southern boundary when they were fallen upon and murdered and scalped by unfriendly indians. The Hebron Moravian Registry gives this account: "Jacob Hantsche and three others were buried on the Moravian graveyard on the day following the murder, Sunday 27 June 1756, under the protection of a detachment of soldiers from the neighboring Fort Swatara, in the prescence of about 200 persons." |
Johannes son,Johnannes II married the neighbor girl, Elizabeth Meily after spending 8 years helping his father clear the land, from virgin soil. They most likely lived with his parents until 1756 when he moved his to a 153 acre tract next to that of his father-in-law. Here he built a log cabin and proceeded to clear his land. He was fixing the bars on his gate, when he was attacked by a band of indians leaving his mutilated corpse. The Hebron Moravian Registry gives this account, "On May 16,1757, John Spitler II was jumped on by murderous indians and killed not far from his house on the Swatara. He was 38 years old and one year ago in April had just moved to Swatara. His mangled corpse was brought here the 17th of May accompanied by a large crowd. He was buried in the graveyard here. Elizabeth seeing the event take place, gathered up her 4 children and ran through the field to her fathers taking refuge in the blockhouse fort there, built in case of indian attack. From the distance, she could see the smoke raise as their cabin was put to the torch. His tombstone in the Moravian cemetary (#28) reads " JOHANNES SPITTLER, geb. d. 24 Sept.1718, Epmordt Von den Wilder d. 16, May 1757, Alt. 27 Jahr 9 mo. 3 ta. |
